Application for teaching job: samples for school posts

Short answerA formal letter naming the post and subject, your degree and B.Ed, and classroom results

  • Private schools
  • Fresher sample
  • Teacher letter
  • Checked 3 Nov 2026

An application for teaching job posts is a formal letter to the principal or school manager that names the post and subject (for example primary teacher, or TGT English), states your degree and teaching qualification such as a B.Ed, and gives one or two facts about your classroom work, then asks for a demo class or interview. Keep it to one page and enclose your resume, mark sheets and certificates.

Private schools in India often receive dozens of letters for one vacancy. The principal looks first at the post, the subject, the qualification and whether you can start when they need you. Make those four things easy to find.

Quick answers

  • Address it to

The Principal, or the Manager or Secretary of the school's managing committee if the advertisement says so.
  • Name the post

Write the level and subject: PRT, TGT or PGT, and the subject.
  • Show qualifications

Degree, B.Ed or teaching diploma, and any teacher eligibility test the post asks for.
  • Add proof

Results, activities or a class you improved. One fact per claim.
  • Enclose

Resume, mark sheets, degree and B.Ed certificates, experience letters, a recent photograph if asked.

Subject: Application for the post of Primary Teacher (English)

Respected Madam,

I learnt from your school's notice board that you need a primary teacher for English from the coming session, and I would like to apply.

I completed my B.A. in English and my B.Ed this year. During my teaching practice I taught classes 3 and 4 at a government school for eight weeks. I used picture cards and short role plays for reading, and the class teacher noted that the quieter children began answering in full sentences.

I enjoy working with young children and I am patient with slow readers. I can also help with the morning assembly and the school's annual day.

I would be happy to give a demonstration class whenever convenient.

Yours faithfully,

Subject: Application for the post of TGT Mathematics

Dear Sir,

Your advertisement in a regional newspaper for a TGT in Mathematics caught my attention, as it fits closely with my six years in the classroom.

I hold an M.Sc. in Mathematics and a B.Ed. At my present school I teach classes 6 to 10. Last year my class 10 sections averaged 78 percent in the board exam, up from 69 the year before, after I started weekly practice tests and a doubt clearing hour on Saturdays.

I also run the maths club, which took part in two inter school quizzes. I am comfortable with smart boards and keep parents updated through monthly notes.

I can join after serving one month's notice at my current school and would welcome an interview.

Yours faithfully,

Short and simple application for teacher job in a private school

Some schools ask you to drop a short application at the office or write one by hand on the spot. Three short paragraphs are enough:

[Your name], [Address], [Phone]

[Date]

The Principal, [School name], [City]

Subject: Application for a teaching post in Social Science

Respected Sir or Madam,

I wish to apply for a Social Science teacher's post in your school for the middle classes.

I am a B.A. graduate in History with a B.Ed and two years of experience at a nearby school, where I taught classes 6 to 8 and organised a heritage walk for students.

Kindly consider me for an interview.

Yours faithfully,
[Your name]

If you are asked to write it by hand, see handwritten job application letter for paper, ink and layout tips.

Emailing your application to a school

Many schools now take applications by email. Put the post in the subject line, write a short body and attach one PDF with your letter and resume.

Subject: Application for PGT Chemistry, [Your name]

Dear Principal,

Please find attached my application for the PGT Chemistry post advertised on your school website. I hold an M.Sc. in Chemistry with a B.Ed and have taught classes 11 and 12 for four years, including lab practicals.

My resume and certificates are attached as one PDF. I am available for a demo lecture any day next week.

Regards,

More wording for the email itself is on job application email.

Strong and weak lines in a teacher's letter

Write lines like

  • "I taught classes 6 to 8 Science for three years and set up the school's first science fair."
  • "My B.Ed included a specialisation in teaching English to young learners."
  • "I can take a demonstration class on any weekday."

Avoid lines like

  • "I am very hard working, sincere and honest." with no example.
  • "I need this job as I am facing financial problems."
  • "Please give me any post in your school." Name one post.
Do not send original certificates. Enclose clear photocopies and carry the originals to the interview for checking.

Filling a school's application form

Some schools give you a printed or online form as well as, or instead of, the letter. Two fields often confuse applicants:

  • Area of study for high school: write your stream, such as Science, Commerce or Humanities, or your main subjects.
  • School name not listed in a drop down: choose Other and type the full name and city of your school or college.

The other boxes are covered in our walkthrough of every form field.

Questions people ask

How do I write a simple application for a teaching job?

Address it to the principal, write a subject line with the post and subject, then three short paragraphs: the post you want, your degree and B.Ed with any experience, and a request for an interview or demo class. Close with Yours faithfully and your name.

What should a fresher write in a teacher job application?

Give your degree, your B.Ed or teaching diploma and your teaching practice: the school, the classes and one thing that went well. Add any tutoring, coaching or school activities you have led.

Who should the application for a teaching job in school be addressed to?

Usually the Principal. Some schools ask you to write to the Manager, the Secretary or the Chairman of the managing committee, so follow the advertisement.

Should I mention salary in the teacher job application letter?

Not unless the advertisement asks for your expected salary. Pay is usually discussed at the interview or offer stage.

What documents should I attach to an application for teacher job in a private school?

Your resume, mark sheets and degree certificates, B.Ed certificate, experience letters, an eligibility test result if the post needs one, and a recent photograph if asked. Send copies, not originals.
